Basketry Circle is a new opportunity to learn basketry techniques in group sessions that teach a different technique each month. Previous experience is not required and you can join us anywhere along the way. There will be a material fee for each class, which will vary with the project. Limited seating.

Registration: Payment of member fee will hold your seat; nonmember balance is due at each class.

When: Second Saturday of each month, 10am to 4pm

Instructor: Marcia Morse Mullins has woven functional vessels and sculptural organic shapes with natural materials since the mid-1980s. She is an experienced basketry instructor with deep knowledge of the techniques and materials needed for each project.

What to bring: All materials provided; if you have your own basketry tools (scissors, awl, packer, etc), please bring them. Snacks, lunch & beverage are suggested. Small refrigerator onsite but no microwave. Fast food options are within a few miles of our location.

TECHNIQUES LIST

March 9 - Coiling. *CLASS COMPLETED Learn to stitch locally sourced Longleaf pine needles into a necklace pendant. Make several pendants or work at a more leisurely pace to enjoy the meditative qualities of coiled basketry. Class fee is $0 for guild members, $10 for nonmembers. Each additional pendant is $10.

April 13 - Twining. *CLASS COMPLETED Work with round rattan to learn open twining, twisted handle, and a border braid. Approximately 8” diameter x 10” tall. $30 member/$40 nonmember

April 21, 1pm - 4pm: Planning a Weaver’s Garden & Dyeing Natural Materials. *REGISTRATION CLOSED. This session will meet at Lowe’s on Hwy 6 in Bartow for a guided tour of their Garden Department to locate and discuss plants that can be used to start a Weaver’s Garden in your own back yard. We will then move to the Gallery to review some basic planting schemes and learn some dyeing techniques for various plant materials. $40/$50

May 11 - Over/Under & Rim Lashing. Work with flat and flat-oval rattan to weave a solid bottom on a D handle with plain weave sides and a rim lashed with cane. Approximately 5’ x 12” base, 14” tall. $45/$55

June 8 - 2/2 Twill. Work with two colors of flat rattan while learning to twill! Approximately 12” x 12” x 3” $40/$50

July 13 - Bias Plaiting. Work with flat rattan to learn the basics of bias plaiting, and learn about collecting and weaving with palm leaves. $40/$50

August 10 & 11 - Basic Caning. Learn basic caning to make a caned stool using an assembled oak frame with drilled holes. We will create the classic caning pattern with strands of cane. Frame measures 10” x 14” x 8” tall. $120/$130
